Abbotsley Hotel
The Abbotsley Golf Hotel is a charming, traditional retreat with something for everyone – especially golfers. It features two 18 hole courses, the Abbotsley and the Cromwell, plus the delicious little Huntingdonshire Par 3 course. The original Abbotsley Course was built in 1975, much of it threading its way through ancient woodland and making clever use of streams and the manor house moat.
Abbotsley was bought in 1986 by former British Women’s Open Champion, Vivien Saunders OBE, as a national training centre. Not only does Abbotsley have its superb championship golf course but also boasts exceptional training facilities, with a driving range,
large practice ground, short game area and fitness centre. With the addition of the Cromwell Course in 1990 and the 42 bedroom hotel, Abbotsley is something rather special.
Abbotsley Course
The Abbotsley Course is a real gem. It isn’t quite long enough to be a true championship course for modern men! But who really wants to flog round 7,000 yards – especially on holiday? Abbotsley regularly hosts men’s county championships, local professional tournaments and has hosted three English Ladies’ Championship events. We’ve enjoyed visits from Nick Faldo, Tony Jacklin, Laura Davies, Alison Nicholas and teams and squads from England, Ireland and Wales.
Let’s say the water is a real challenge on four holes but can leap out and catch you on the others! Abbotsley is pleasantly undulating, with wonderful mature trees – gorgeous blossom in the spring and magnificent colour in the autumn.
Names like Barley Slice, Pear Tree Wood, Moatside and Corncracker give a taste of the challenge. And then there’s Mousehole, named after the infamous village in Cornwall, and its treacherous harbour. That’s a clue to Abbotsley’s 11th hole!
