Summary
Hamptworth Golf & Country Club boasts one of the most under rated, but finest courses in the South of England, a ‘hidden jewel’, the course has a fine reputation with those that play it and has held some major professional events in its short but prestigious time. The course gently weaves its way through the ancient woodland of the Hamptworth estate, giving you the impression that you are in a world of your own, but that the course has stood here for more than 100 years.
The course is a golfing treat to play, the perfect mix of forest, downland and intriguing water hazards, most of which are the result of the river Blackwater meandering its way through the course giving it its very own natural qualities. The peaceful walk with the gentle sounds of the river trickling in the background can lead you into a false sense of security, as the course has a potential bite to it. A strategic challenge, to master the course you need to have an even mix of distance and accuracy, ball control is a must, as trying to overpower this course will only lead to disappointment on your behalf.
The course is an even split of two 9’s with both the 9th and 18th greens sharing the huge and unique double green. The two 9’s have a very different feel to them, the front 9 offers more water and the back 9 feels more like a pure forest course, the two blended together give you every experience you will need from a golf course. The course benefits from U.S.G.A specification greens, and the superior nature of these greens enable them to stay open all year round, in fact we are able to have a policy that we remain on full tees and full greens throughout the year regardless of the weather conditions.
The championship course doesn’t sound long at 6356 yards from the white tees, however the undulating fairways and accuracy that is required to play the course makes it feel long at a par 70. There are plenty of holes to suit a big drive, but also some where strategy is more appropriate. However, if you are looking for a more relaxed round, then the yellow tees may well suit you measuring 6017 yards and is a more generous par 72.
Which ever course you choose to play, we are sure you will enjoy yourself and you are assured of a warm welcome.
